Argentine priest released after detention at retirees' protest

Father Paco Olveira was released this Wednesday after being detained by the Federal Police during the retirees' march that took place after noon in the vicinity of the Congress.

"There is a persecution of retirees because they are the tip of the iceberg of the discontent that exists in our country, beyond an electoral result," stated the priest, who belongs to the group "Priests in Action for the Poor," in statements to the media present.

Olveira was released along with a young man named Fidel, who was part of the demonstration and had been detained along with the priest.

"Father 'Paco' had been violently detained on the Congress square. Today more than ever, we have to be with the retirees every Wednesday," expressed, for his part, the deputy for Union for the Homeland, Eduardo Valdés.

As part of the security operation, the first cordon of the operation was in charge of the Federal Police, which carried out the detentions, while the City Police were located in a second cordon.

The retirees carried out the protest as they do every Wednesday in the vicinity of the Congress demanding an increase in their incomes and against the veto by President Javier Milei on the reform that established an increase in benefits.
